What is it?
The Swing Dance is a fundraiser for the BHSN Band Program. It features live dance music provided by our four amazing jazz bands, plus the TriNorth Jazz Band. The music is energetic with a great beat – think “big band” music from the likes of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, and Duke Ellington. There are delicious desserts and drinks for sale. This is not just a band event or a student dance – we hope to see people of all ages and affiliations from throughout the community.
No excuses
Don’t know how to swing dance? Don’t worry, the evening begins with a free dance lesson. from the IU Swing Dance Club. (Students can also attend dance lesson tutorials throughout the week.) Looks too difficult? Feel free to dance however you want! Many people do. You don’t have a date/dance partner? Singles and groups of friends will have a great time too. If you don’t dance at all, you’re welcome to just sit at a table and tap your feet to the catchy beats.
Tickets
$20 for adults, $10 for ages 18 and under, $50 maximum for a family. Buy tickets online or at the door (cash or checks payable to BHSN Band Boosters).
Period clothing
The theme for the party is a 40’s Jazz Club. There’s no need to come in costume, but we hope many of you do. Have fun with it!
Volunteering
We need lots of volunteers from band families! Jazz band students will be asked to help setup and/or cleanup. They can also sign up for specific jobs but we do need parents to fill most of those positions. The adult signup sheet is available on https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090a4aa4af23a5f85-2022. If you’d like to volunteer but the shifts don’t fit your schedule, email Caroline Johnson at cjand4ladies at gmail.com. Thank you so much!
For an early start on learning to dance
- Check Google for dance lesson videos – search for Swing Dance, East and West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, and Lindy Hop
- Here’s one video with slightly more advanced basic figures
- Take a look at advanced dancers in the days of black and white TV and movies!
The most important advice we can give the ladies is NO HIGH HEELS or PLATFORM SHOES. That’s a broken ankle waiting to happen. Comfort is the key for those fast moving feet.
